Free Film Lab 2022: High Fantasy – Ost-Passage Theater

Eine außergewöhnliche Body-Switch-Komödie, ein pseudo-dokumentarisches Experiment, ein bissiger Kommentar zum Stand der Rainbow Nation – das alles ist "High Fantasy" von Jenna Bass. Der Film handelt von vier Freund:innen, die einen Campingausflug im südafrikanischen Nothern Cape machen. Xoli, Lexi, Tatiana und Thami. Sie sind jung, sie sind woke. Doch die Location zu der die weiße Lexi eingeladen hat, das riesige Farmland ihrer Familie, sorgt mit seiner kolonialen Geschichte für erste Spannungen in der Gruppe. Immer mehr clashen die politischen Ansichten der jungen Menschen aufeinander - bis sie plötzlich nicht mehr in ihren eigenen Körpern stecken.
Das von der Regisseurin und den Darstellenden kollaborativ entwickelte Drehbuch wirft einen tiefen Blick in die gesellschaftlichen Verwerfungen der südafrikanischen Rainbow Nation. Auch das iPhone7S, mit dem der Film gedreht wurde, nehmen die vier Protagonist*innen dabei selbst in die Hand und realisieren eine faszinierende Filmsprache des Smartphone-Zeitalters. Crammed into a car, four friends are going on a camping trip. Their destination is an isolated farm in South Africa’s Northern Cape. It’s owned by Lexi’s (Francesca Michel) family, and she’s invited her two best friends; Politically radical Xoli (Qondiswa James) and happy-go-lucky Tatiana (Liza Scholtz). Without telling the others, she’s also invited a new male friend, Thami (Nala Khumalo), who’s chauvinistic attitude immediately puts the three young women on edge. What’s more, Xoli won’t let Lexi forget her white privilege, that her coloniser forefathers only own this land at the expense of the country’s indigenous black people. Tatiana does her best to keep the peace, but it’s only a matter of time before things fall apart.
They’re all in their early 20’s, recent graduates of university and the national Fees Must Fall protests that brought South African colleges to a standstill in 2015 and 2016. To them, like many of their “woke” generation, the post-apartheid Rainbow Nation of Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu is nothing but an ill-conceived fantasy. As they navigate a labyrinth of so-called Rainbow Nation politics, they capture their bizarre predicament in selfie videos - with hilarious and tragic results.(Bass, ZA 2017 - FSK 12)
