Performing Neighbourhood ist ein internationales Austauschprojekt zwischen dem Ost-Passage Theater (Leipzig, Germany) und dem Volcano Theatre (Swansea, Wales), gefördert durch Cultural Bridge und den Fonds Soziokultur.

Beide Häuser arbeiten an der Schnittstelle von Theater, Community-Arbeit und Stadtteilkultur. In Stadtteilen, die von sozialer Ungleichheit, Strukturwandel und kultureller Ausgrenzung geprägt sind, schaffen sie Räume für Begegnung, Kreativität und gesellschaftliche Teilhabe. Im Rahmen des Projekts besuchen sich die Teams gegenseitig, lernen voneinander, tauschen Erfahrungen aus und entwickeln neue Perspektiven für die Arbeit mit ihren Communities.
Ein besonderer Bestandteil des Projekts ist das „Dosentelefon“ – eine künstlerische Kommunikationsinstallation, die beide Theater dauerhaft miteinander verbindet. Gäste, Ehrenamtliche, Künstlerinnen und Nachbarinnen können darüber direkt mit Menschen im jeweils anderen Theater in Kontakt treten und so einen lebendigen Austausch zwischen Leipzig und Swansea ermöglichen.
Erstes Treffen: Between Bytes and Bites
Mit der Auftaktveranstaltung „Between Bytes and Bites“ hat das Projekt bereits begonnen. Im Mittelpunkt standen das gegenseitige Kennenlernen und der Aufbau der Dosentelefon-Installation. Über eine Live-Zoom-Schaltung konnten Besucher*innen des Ost-Passage Theaters die Menschen hinter dem Volcano Theatre kennenlernen und erste Gespräche über die Distanz hinweg führen.
Natürlich durfte auch das gemeinsame Essen nicht fehlen: Während im Ost-Passage Theater Fish & Chips serviert wurden, gab es im Volcano Theatre Currywurst mit Pommes – ein kulinarischer Austausch zwischen Wales und Deutschland. Der Abend markierte den Beginn einer Partnerschaft, die in den kommenden Monaten durch weitere Begegnungen, gemeinsame Veranstaltungen und kreative Experimente wachsen wird.

Performing Neighbourhood is an international exchange project between Ost-Passage Theater in Leipzig, Germany, and Volcano Theatre in Swansea, Wales. The project is supported by Cultural Bridge and Fonds Soziokultur.
Both organisations work at the intersection of theatre, community engagement and neighbourhood culture. Based in urban areas shaped by social precarity, post-industrial change and cultural exclusion, they create spaces for participation, creativity and social connection. Through reciprocal visits, local exploration and collaborative activities, the two teams will exchange experiences, learn from each other’s successes and challenges, and develop new approaches to community-based cultural work.
A key element of the project is the “Dosentelefon” (“Tin Can Telephone”) – an artistic communication installation creating a permanent connection between the two theatres. Visitors, volunteers, artists and community members are invited to use the line to contact the partner venue directly and engage in conversations across borders.
First Event: Between Bytes and Bites
The project officially kicked off with the event “Between Bytes and Bites”. The gathering focused on building connections between the two organisations and installing the Dosentelefon communication system. Through a live Zoom link, participants at Ost-Passage Theater were able to meet the people behind Volcano Theatre and begin exchanging ideas and experiences.Food played an important role in the evening as well. Fish & chips were served in Leipzig, while Volcano Theatre welcomed guests with currywurst and fries – a playful culinary exchange between Wales and Germany. The event marked the beginning of a growing partnership that will continue through future visits, shared events and creative experiments connecting the communities of Swansea and Leipzig.
